Hi everyone, I've recently started my FM11 career, (currently managing Bromley in the first season if anyone is interested). I have a couple of questions:

1. After my first couple of matches I've noticed I am missing when substitutions take place for the opponent. The only notification seems to be in the text commentary, but if you are busy studying the game this is easily missed. Any fix ideas for this would be welcome.

2. Players don't seem to follow instructions as closely as I would like. For example I have set throw-ins and set pieces at this time to short, but this doesn't seem to happen. I have selected a player to give short option but this still doesn't happen.

When the players understanding and everything is at full tilt with the system, how closely is it possible to get teams in Football Manager to follow exactly what you tell them to do in the setup screens? Do players still do their own thing whatever you do?

Thanks for the help.

Don't know about the first question.

The second problem could be a matter of creative freedom. Lower this and see if the players follow your instructions more closely

Well, if you're watching the match in full time, you should see a player leaving the pitch and another one taking his place. Also, the (shirt) number will change. And there's the text commentary. But yeah, you can still miss it.

Bear in mind that the AI will (in my experience) only sub a player before the 60th or so minute if they suffer a injury or if they are performing really, really badly on the pitch.

I assume you mean throw-ins and corners. I don't think I ever had this problem. When it comes to set-pieces, players mostly follow instruction, regardless of creative freedom (as far as I can tell). If we're talking about corners, is by any chance the player that's supposed to be the short option the one doing the corner?

You can get them to do their best to perform to your instructions if you're playing with a low level of creative freedom. However, if, for example, you set your players to very short passing and then give them no short passing options they will either sit there like idiots and be closed down or try a longer pass. Giving players creative freedom will allow them to ignore settings if they see that there is a better option.

You want your attacking players (if they have a decent value for Creativity and Decisions) to look for better options if one is available. Players with poor creativity and decisions and defensive players should try to do the safe thing (lower creative freedom). If you're managing in the lower leagues, it's probably safest to use creative freedom very, very sparingly.
