I skimmed through the FAQ and this thread and didn't see my question, but if I missed it for some reason then please just point me in the correct direction.

I wanted to know how to create Arrows and Barrows when setting up your tactics?

I know, that is ultimate stupidity, but me and my friend are having trouble finding this out. Thanks in advance.

AFAIK it is apple key and click, or buy a mouse that is less beautiful.

    Merry christmas everyone.

Should hold up ball mostly be used in high tempo attacking tactics, or slow tempo attacking tactics. If used in high tempo, the player will let other players past and because since the ball had been played quickly to him from the back line, it may need holding up. Or slow tempo, since the team take a while to get it to the goal, hold up ball will allow them to take more time. This one is confusing me, thanks.

Merry Christmas to you too, Jaswarbrick.

It is not really a contradiction in your question, and you could as well extend this to slow tempo defensive tactics or medium tempo defensive tactics. It all depends on what you want to achieve, as you have stated in your examples, both ideas may work, despite my impression that slow tempo is less suited for attacking tactics in 08, but certainly it is possible, depending on your approach again.

Did you already read the TB topic on HUB? We tried to show many different solutions there, but maybe some are missing?

Thanks Diaby, just a little bit of conflicting advice. In the play fm thread wwfan states for attack and control, hold up ball used for wingers and attackers, and in the bible hold up ball section, Millie recommends not really using hold up ball in a flat 442 with ML/Rs. Also, in my tactics i use a deeper creative forward who has forward runs rarely and much creative freedom, and a more poachier striker with forward runs mixed and normal creative freedom (who usually swap by the way, as i play Rooney and Tevez there mostly), but it only has cases for when they are target men. Does this mean i should use one of these players as target men? If i don't, i am really not quite sure which one of these strikers should hold up the ball (the deeper one i have running with ball).

The control tactic is a bugger really. In the play fm thread wwfan suggests slow tempo and there have been thoughts on this forum of using quick tempo, but wouldn't this just be almost the same as attack? Just playing a bit wider, forward runs often if not already often for the attack tactic, and a slightly deeper defensive line? Isn't slow tempo needed for some distinguisment between the two tactics?

Another thing Diaby, have you read my thread about linking settings together? Because i have a question to ask.

    http://www.fm-britai...?showtopic=6572

I am putting some finishing touches to my tactic set before uploading it to the laboratory for some testing with other users. I went some 39 games unbeaten with the set i made (in the League) from towards the end of the first season to near the end of the second season. I lost 2 games towards the end of the 2nd season although dominating both matches. I need to ask that if i upload my tactic set for testing and some problems arise, may i ask in this thread for the answers to those problems, or should i ask the questions in the thread of my tactic that contains the set which will be posted in the lab? By the way my set uses the ideas that are explained in my linking thread.

    Thanks alot.

A flat 4-4-2 does not have much in common with control or any other full arrowed winger tactic, additionally HUB in control with wingers certainly will change for FM 08. I just hold up ball with attacking fullbacks for 08, but I personally think it also works without any HUB instructions.

[quote]Also, in my tactics i use a deeper creative forward who has forward runs rarely and much creative freedom, and a more poachier striker with forward runs mixed and normal creative freedom (who usually swap by the way, as i play Rooney and Tevez there mostly), but it only has cases for when they are target men. I am using HUB with quick forwards as well, it depends on what you want to achieve. It does not really have to be linked to supply to head. It is particularly useful if playing on the counter and wasting too many one-on-ones with quick target men receiving the ball in the final third. It is the question if you want to HUB at all with such a combo, I would consider using it only for counter attacking tactics.

Not really, it can also be passing and width. I also tend to slow down tempo for my control tactics, but I keep it at a mixed level compared to the slow tempo in 07. The important factor is keeping as much possession as possible while putting maximum pressure on the very deep lying opposition. The difference between attack and control is more subtle than it was in 07. I personally tend to use overloading tactics more often now.

I did read it, but probably I should read it again. I really don't care, post your questions wherever you think they may get the best answers.

when i try to open .pkm in FM 2007 using the 'View Match' option from the main screen, the loading bar completes but then the screen goes blank and crashes. I get a dialog box saying that 'an error log has been generated in C:\Program Files\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2007'

    Why is that so?

Thanks Diaby, for some reason also another major bugger is that i can't seem to get much posession (52-53%) at home with my Man United team. I usually start home games with the attack tactic i have made, and not sure if the quick (15) tempo has anything to do with it. While away from home against teams i should beat, i use my balanced tactic which usually gets me around 57%. I dont know why this is, maybe because in the attack tactic every player's through balls are set to often, but this is suggested in the Play fm thread. Could i upload it here for you to take a little look? I know you are probably very busy testing your own tactics and other things, but posession just won't come for me. Thanks

I'm not sure whether this is a stupid question or not but here goes anyway...

I've read pretty much everything located in "Articles -> Tactics" section but I still have a lot of catching to do with the forum itself, so please bear with me. I read this great article about opposition instructions and it gave me nice little confidence boost because I realized that I had being instructing my players to handle the opposition's different roles pretty much the same way and I even learned couple of pointers. Anyway, my question is: ever since I read the part about "shove the opposition winger to his weaker foot if it matches the flank" I've been wondering which foot are we talking about here? Because in the past I've instructed my players that opponent's wingers are shoved onto the foot of their flank (right for (A)M R and left for (A)M L) because I wanted to "trap" them to their flank and prevent them from cutting in and crossing from the byline instead because my defenders are capable of winning most of the aerial battles for sure.

Does the "weaker foot if it matches his flank" in this context mean that if there's AM R who is right-footed, he should be shoved to his left foot, sort of blocking the way to the byline and force the winger to either cut-in or side/back-pass?

Anyway, I hope you tactical geniouses had a nice christmas and it's new year on the door again! Happy holidays for everyone and for those who loves Premiership, it couldn't be better time of the year! The match between Arsenal and Portsmouth was great match, I'm really pleased that Pompey were able to cause The Gunners their first goalless stalemate of the season (it's not too hard to realize what team I'm managing in FM2008, now is it?) Ah well, I'll end my rant & ramble here and read some mo' tactical articles and enjoy some of the "festive goods"! :

Ok, thanks for the answer, Millie!

This has worked very well for me but there's the downside in it, that when AI notices that my team is forcing their wingers on their weaker foot, they start swapping the wingers on opposite flanks and nullify my opponent instructions. Of course, this is when I update my opposition instructions to correspond to the current opposition formation but then after a couple of minutes, the AI switches the wingers from flank to flank again. Ok, this is not really a downside but a rather irritating thing as one has to be extremely alert and notice as SOON as the opponent switches the wingers to opposite flanks and react correspondingly. And sometimes if the tactical changes haven't kicked in yet, the opponent may just open the scoring because the originally right winger was shoved onto his left foot (which is weaker) now has switched flanks and the originally left winger now on the right is still shoved to the left foot and suddenly he cuts in and blasts a curling shot in the upper corner of the net.

Anyway, thanks again for the answer and keep up the good work! Your tactical article threads are just great reading and has provided me more than enough information to "attack" certain areas of my game that haven't been working as well as it should've!

I go with the theory that Individual settings override team settings. But for the team mentality setting, you are allowed two additional clicks. How to interpret this?

Another one, In Fm2007, one could just select a target man and not tick the use target man box. But in FM2008 is it necessary to tick the box to bring the target man into play?

Ultra-defensive and all-out attack (the most extreme team settings) override the individual settings, and are the equivalent to having the entire team on 2 or 21 global mentality.

I think the "semi target man" system still works in '08, but you'll have to ask some others that use it on a more regular basis than I do.

so if he's an "either foot" type, is that what the "left foot/right foot" options are for? or should we just let this brigand have his way with our pitch and capture our wenches for his un-Godly purposes?

In this case you still could show on left foot if he plays on the right side to force him to stay outside, but I would not do this with a player who has both options, it could make your defenders get caught on the wrong side and lose many key tackles. Showing on the weak foot can support defence and other instructions, but it is not the only way and certainly will not stop a player completely or take him out of the game.

i'm just thinking, if they have a forward or forwards who are strong in the air, would this force the winger to cut inside and thus *not* make a cross that might spell trouble? i notice that when cutting in, mos wingers (so far) in 2k8 take the shot themselves. common defensive strategy in basketball to try and decide which opponent you want taking the shot, trying to make their worst shooters beat you. or will my defender getting caught on the wrong side cuase more problems than it's worth?

so far i've been having OK luck with it, but only against relatively crappy wingers, i don't dare try it against miss Christiano Ronaldo.

I'll just want to ask u, what is the differential between FCd = Deep Lying Forward and FCa = Advanced Forward?

Is it the FCd is a targetman or not really?
