A new section has opened up on the FM-B forums. In essence, it’s a challenge section – but there’s a little more to it than that. Here’s a quick run down of the FMB:CL.
What is the FMB:CL?
The FMB:CL is a series of challenges to add a little bit of variety to your games. Unlike most challenges though which always tend to have a clearly defined goal or take an eternity to complete, we at FM-Britain hope to release a series of challenges which take only a few game-years to complete. But most importantly, you’re not competing to be the first to cross the finishing line – you’re competing to be the best to cross the finishing line.
We will award points for success on and off the football field based on the peculiarities of the challenge, and hopefully add something a little different than other sites currently offer. Over the year, members can compete in as many or as few challenges as they like. At the end of each challenge it will be the member with the most FMB:CL points who wins – not necessarily the first to complete it!
So, how does this points thing work?
There are two types of points you can get. Bonus points are the simplest to explain since you will get a certain amount of points for completing certain tasks (such as winning a particular trophy, or selling a player for a lot of money, etc.) However, we have a “FMB:CL computer” which takes you media prediction at the beginning of each season and, using your league record, gives you a rating based on how many points you get and in which position you finish.
Aha, there’s more than one way to skin the proverbial cat?
Yes, hopefully we’ll give you more than one avenue to gain the most points in a challenge. You could try and steal all the bonus points you can or you can concentrate solely on your league record to try and outscore your fellow manager that way. Which route will prove best is ultimately down to the community.
Wow. Sounds complicated!
The formula is! But don’t worry, it’s really simple for you to enter. All we need is your media prediction and the final league table. These can be uploaded to the forum really easily as screen shots, and we’ll need other proof anyway to show you’re not cheating!
OK, then. So what do I need to get started?
All you need is a copy of Football Manager 2008, some form of image software (even something simple, such as Paint) and be signed up to the FM-Britain forums. How simple is that?
Do I need to enter all the challenges?
Not at all. Enter as many or as few as take your fancy. All the challenges will run for ever, so you have as long as you want to update your scores, and you can enter each challenge as many times as you like.
Hmm. I don’t like any of those challenges you have there…
That’s OK, just create your own! On top of the “official” challenges that the FM-B staff will create on a semi-regular basis, we actively encourage members to set up their own challenges. If they become popular they may even be elevated to “official” status themselves.
Well, what about if I just want to play the game normally?
You can. We have a main challenge called “The Open” – simply play the game as normal and submit your scores. We have a competition for the best one-off season and for the best three seasons of a single save for you more consistent FM types. Hopefully there’s something on offer for everyone. And that way, at least, it should be LLaMa compatible, since you won’t have to play the game any differently to how you normally would.
We will be opening a few challenges to start the forum off, as well as a copy of the masterthread that started it all off (the FM07 BETA test of the “computer”). Additionally, we’ve done a review of the 2006/07 season to show you how those FMB:CL points relate to real life performances, plus a review of every manager to be sacked so far this season.
Check out the challenges and the articles and see if you’ve got what it takes to be the best. We hope to see you there!
