This is a short 8.0.1 update covering several issues and changes we have collected in the TTT. Some have already been mentioned in the related TB topics. If you wonder why there are no marginal updates to each single topic yet, we usually do not start with this until the final patch has arrived. This method has proven its efficiency, we already see that around 80% of the tactical bible stuff will hold water with rather slight adjustments, and there will be probably more changes coming from additional topics and less from moderate revisions of the TB 07.
Strong target men
Strong strikers have been highly overrated in 07. They still do work in 08, but not in the way that the entire team can live on the flick-ons made by a strong TM.
One-on-one conversion
One on ones are far less of a good chance than most people think. Currently the conversion rate is extremely low, but even in real life it is just about 30 to 35%. If you are basing your tactics on creating one-on-ones you will see frustrating results.
Corner routines
If you want to see your corner routines being carried out and if you would like to use anything else than distribution to the near post, you have to remove all players from the near post. Players attacking the ball from deep, attacking near and far post, challenging the keeper and standing on far post seem to be more prolific.
Playmaker
Playmaker selection does not make a difference in passing. As of now, this setting is broken.
Defensive midfielders ball losses
Defensive and strong midfielders are too prone to being fouled and losing the ball which can lead to devastating defensive situations. A possible cure is removing HUB, increasing their passing and applying a higher tempo.
Man marking
Still there are several issues with man marking and tight marking, which does not seem to be as effective as it should be. A possible solution is using fullbacks on loose zonal marking, especially if playing against multi-strata formations
Opposition instructions
Tight marking and closing down always can cause severe defensive positioning problems if applied to wingers and strikers. Often the closing down players make disastrous decisions and just open space for a through ball played by the closed down player into the space they left behind them, while another attacking player will exactly move there and receive the pass.
Right now giving space to the opposition seems to lead to more defensive stability, which is contradictory to modern football and the way FM 07 worked as well. Solution: restrict yourself to showing on weaker foot for attacking players and occasionally hard tackling (handle with care).
Tempo
Slow tempo games are very much suited for keeping possession and a patient build up play, but attacking tactics may need much more tempo than in 07.
Weather
The differences between a shower and a deluge can be seen strongly now. If you are playing on a very deep pitch, you should try to apply the same changes as recommended, during a simple ‘wet’ game you may just use one notch more on passing and tempo (unless you are playing quick, direct anyway).
Passing on the flanks
Much more rewarded, both defensively and in attacking version. Should be seen as a very good option for extremely attacking and defensive formations in 08, much stronger as in the previous instalment.
